Name behind the Name:

YAHWEH    YHWH

God reveals his name to Moses as “I AM.”
This comes from the Hebrew root word, “being.”
The verbal form meaning “he is/exists” or “he causes to be”

Exodus 3:13-15 NKJV
13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me. ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and this is My Memorial to all generations.

Biblical story context: How did we get to Moses at the burning bush?
The children of Israel have been oppressed for nearly 400 years. Eventually a new Pharaoh rose in Egypt who did not know Joseph and his significance. He only saw that the Israelites were greater in number and mightier. He was afraid one day they would fight against them in war, hence forcing them into slavery. The more infliction he caused, the more the Israelites multiplied. God made provision over Moses’ life to save him from being killed when the King ordered all baby boys to be thrown in the river. Around the age of 40, Moses fled from Egypt because he killed an Egyptian for beating a slave. So here we are now at the burning bush and for the last 40 years, he has been living in Midian as a shepherd and married Zipporah, the daughter of a priest. Now God is telling him to go confront Pharaoh. Moses was hesitant. He’s 80 yrs old and somehow, he must earn the trust of the slaves and inspire hope in them. He must prove to them that God hadn’t forgotten them.

Biblical Traditions
God spoke this personal name to Moses. The name YHWH was the original term. The literal name of God was considered too holy to say out loud. Only the priests in the holiest of places within the temple could say it. Eventually no one said it and the pronunciation was lost. Today it is accepted as Yahweh.

Self - Existent God
Going back to the root “I AM”, “He is/exists”. God does not need us to exist. He is completely whole within himself, and eternal. God stands alone in needing nothing. Only the creator of all things can call himself “I AM” in the absolute sense. Every creature is in debt to him for their existence. He is the God of Gods, the everlasting God, the God of their fathers, He was , He is, and is to come. “I AM WHO I AM” was the assertion that YHWH is the one and only true God.

Covenant Keeping God
God identifies that he was worshipped by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Not only does he remind us that he is unchanging, but he is assuring Moses that the covenant he had made them was still intact. God hears the cries of his people and is reminded of the covenant to give them a promised land. (Genesis 15)

Personal God
God personally reveals himself to the people of
Israel, telling them that he is their God. He wants
His people to find comfort in him, to call on his
name and know that he will keep his promises to them.

Power of the Tongue
YHWH was too holy to be spoken. This actually
emphasizes that life and death are in the power
of the tongue. When you start a statement with “I
AM” you are literally calling on God. “He causes to
be.” Whatever you follow in that statement, you
are making your request known to God.
